  • Contest Guidelines


    Submissions:

    • Open to all members of the Florida Atlantic community (faculty, students, staff and postdocs)
    • Unlimited submissions per person, presented with a short title and a brief description (word count minimum of 100 words) of the research the image or video is portraying, written in language non-researchers can understand, include any explanation of what was involved capturing the photograph or video.
    • Original images and footage of research taking place in connection to Florida Atlantic University, including color-enhanced microscopy, photos taken in the lab and in the field, underwater imagery of marine research, fractal imagery and other photos or videos illustrating the beauty that is inherent in research, scholarship and creative activity.
    • Submissions must be relative to current or on-going projects, with no entries of projects prior to August 2022. Limit is six entries per research project.
    • Photographs or videos from the same research project, or relative entries, may not win more than once.
    • No person can win more than one category.
    • Previous winning photographs, including honorable mentions, may not be submitted in more than one Art of Science contest, and if resubmitted, will not advance to judging. 
    • Animal-related photographs and videos will be reviewed by Florida Atlantics’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee prior to advancing to judging.
  • Winners and Prizes:

    • Winners and honorable mentions will be featured on Research Daily and a variety of other news outlets, social media platforms and more. 
    • Winners and honorable mentions may also be featured in an art exhibit. 
    • A single entrant may not win more than one prize.
    • Undergraduate student submissions may be considered for the cover of Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal or the Undergraduate Symposium booklet.
    • Any winner may have the option to allow Florida Atlantic to license the photo for commercial and non-commercial purposes to help raise money to support research. If a photo is licensed, any revenue received will be distributed in accordance with FAU's Intellectual Property Policy. See examples here under the portfolio tab.

    Requirements:

    • Entries must be 2 MB or higher for photographs.
    • Photo resolution must be 300 dpi. 
    • Low-resolution photos and/or videos may be disqualified.
    • No watermarks.
    • Video must be at least 720P or HD, 1920x1080 pixels.
    • Saved as JPEG or JPG, PNG or TIFF and MP4, MOV.
    • Maximum upload size for photos and videos is 50 MB.
    • Any operation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV/drone) by a contestant must be in compliance with laws and policies.
