Contest Guidelines

Submissions:

• Open to all members of the Florida Atlantic community (faculty, students, staff and postdocs)
• Unlimited submissions per person, presented with a short creative title and description of the research the image or video is portraying, written in language non-researchers can understand, include any explanation of what was involved capturing the photograph or video.
• Title: Each submission title must be unique. Do not use numbers (i.e. image1, image 2). Maximum of six words per title. Submission titles are subject to change.
• Description: Must be at least 100 words in length and must NOT identify specific people or colleges.
• Original images and footage of research taking place in connection to Florida Atlantic University, including color-enhanced microscopy, photos taken in the lab and in the field, underwater imagery of marine research, fractal imagery and other photos or videos illustrating the beauty that is inherent in research, scholarship and creative activity.
• Photography or video of artwork (i.e. paintings, sculptures, etc.) qualifies, if connected to Florida Atlantic research.
• AI(artificial intelligence)-generated imagery, photo/video collages, book covers and stock imagery are subject to review.
• Videos with copyrighted music may be subject to audio being muted prior to advancing to judging.
• Must be relative to current or on-going projects, with no entries of projects prior to July 2023. Limit is six entries per research project.
• Photographs or videos from the same research project, or relative entries, may not win more than once.
• No person can win more than one category.
• Previous winning photographs, including honorable mentions, may not be submitted in more than one Art of Science contest, and if resubmitted, are subject to review. 
• Animal-related photographs and videos are subject to review by Florida Atlantic’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee prior to advancing to judging.

Winners and Prizes:

• Prizes include: Ray-Ban Meta Sunglasses, Meta Quest 3 VR Headset, Apple technology
• Winners and honorable mentions may be featured in the Art of Science gallery, on Research Daily, news outlets, social media platforms and promotional and educational collateral.
• Art of Science representatives will connect with winners about potential related items to display at Art of Science gallery.
• A single entrant may not win more than one prize.
• Undergraduate student submissions may be considered for the cover of Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal or the Undergraduate Symposium booklet.
• Any winner may have the option to allow Florida Atlantic to license the photo for commercial and non-commercial purposes to help raise money to support research. If a photo is licensed, any revenue received will be distributed in accordance with FAU's Intellectual Property Policy. See examples here under the portfolio tab.

Requirements:

• Submit highest-resolution entries.
• Entries must be 2 MB or higher.
• Photo resolution must be 300 dpi (print-purposes).
• Low-resolution photos and/or videos are subject to review.
• No watermarks.
• Video must be at least 720P or HD, 1920 x 1080 pixels.
• Saved as JPEG or JPG, PNG or TIFF and MP4, MOV.
• Maximum upload size for photos and videos is 250 MB.
• Any operation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV/drone) by a contestant must be in compliance with laws and policies.
