Conditional logic in surveys
Branching, skip patterns, and piping — the logic that makes long surveys feel short.
Conditional logic is the difference between a survey that feels short and one that feels endless. Branching, skip patterns, and piping let you ask the right questions of the right respondents and skip the rest, so the survey adapts to each person rather than forcing everyone through the same long path. Used well, it shortens completion times, raises response rates, and produces cleaner data.
What conditional logic actually does
Conditional logic changes the survey path based on the respondent's previous answers. The four patterns that cover almost every real use case:
- Skip logic — jump past a question or section that does not apply. The cleanest example: "Do you currently use this product? If no, skip the product feedback section."
- Show/hide logic — reveal a question only when the previous answer warrants it. "If satisfaction is below 4, show 'what fell short?'."
- Branching — entire alternate paths based on a screening answer. Customers and prospects answer different surveys assembled from a shared pool of questions.
- Piping — insert a previous answer into a later question. "You said you bought the [product]. How would you rate it?" personalizes without manual editing.
If a respondent ever sees a question that does not apply to them — "rate the support team" when they have never contacted support — your logic is missing or broken. Every irrelevant question costs you completion rate and data quality at once.
When to branch and when not to
Branching is powerful and easy to overdo. The right level of complexity depends on what you are trying to learn:
- Branch when paths diverge meaningfully — a customer who has used the product needs different questions than one who tried it once and stopped. The path difference is real, so the branch is justified.
- Branch on the screening question — disqualify or fast-track at question two so unqualified respondents do not waste time or skew your data.
- Show open follow-ups conditionally — detractors and promoters get different "why?" prompts. Single conditional question, big payoff.
- Do not branch for cosmetic reasons — if the branch produces two questions that ask the same thing in slightly different words, just write one well-worded version.
- Do not branch the score itself — keep the primary metric question identical for everyone so the trend is comparable.

Piping for personalization without manual work
Piping inserts an answer from earlier in the survey into a later question. The patterns that pay off:
- Product piping — "You selected [product] above. How would you rate it?" lets one survey serve a multi-product catalog.
- Score piping — "You gave us a [score] out of 10. What is the main reason?" reflects the answer back to the respondent and improves the verbatim quality.
- Identity piping — "Hi [first name]" from a hidden field passed through the survey URL. Pre-fill from the CRM rather than asking respondents to retype their name.
- Segment piping — different language to different cohorts based on a hidden tier or plan field.
Piping fails ungracefully if the source answer is missing. Always set a fallback (a default product name or "your recent purchase") so a malformed link does not produce a question that says "How would you rate the {{product}}?".
The traps that break conditional logic
Branching adds complexity, and complexity adds bugs. The patterns that consistently break:
- Orphaned questions — a question only some respondents see, but the analysis treats it as universal. Always document which respondents saw which questions, and report rates against the relevant denominator.
- Dead ends — a branch that leads to a path with no exit. Test every disqualification branch end-to-end before launch.
- Looping logic — a branch that sends the respondent back to a question they have already answered. Modern tools usually prevent it, but pilot tests catch the cases the validator misses.
- Fragile piping — a piped value that can be empty. Always set a fallback string.
- Logic that conflicts with required fields — a hidden question that is also marked required can block submission. Resolve by making conditional questions optional or by setting visibility before requirement.

Surveys with well-designed conditional logic consistently outperform flat surveys on completion rate, average response duration, and verbatim quality. The mechanics:
- Shorter perceived length — respondents only see questions that apply, so the survey feels two to four minutes when the underlying question pool is twice that size.

- Cleaner data — irrelevant answers (rating a feature you have never used) drop out of the data set rather than producing noise.
