NORTHERN PLAINS
The Northern Plains region of Costa Rica is home to the country’s two most active volcanoes, wet and evergreen forests, several rivers and rich cultural centers. Visit the Poás Volcano, which is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica; and hike the base of the Arenal Volcano, which towers over the charming Costa Rican town of La Fortuna, home to some of Latin America’s most impressive geothermal hot springs, heated naturally by the Tabacón River. For those looking to go thrill-seeking underneath Arenal, the nearby Venado Caverns offer a unique cave-hiking experience with icicle formations believed to have been materialized millions of years ago by streams which still run through the caves. Visitors will have an opportunity to see the subterranean wildlife including bats, monochrome frogs, fish and marine fossils, many of which are endemic to the area. In Heredia, the Sarapiquí River is another popular attraction. Known for its rich biodiversity, this imposing river travels through dense vegetation where birds abound and is ideal for those who enjoy shooting rapids with a moderate degree of difficulty. The town of Sarchí is the perfect destination for unscripted moments and true cultural immersion. Here you can learn the history of Costa Rica’s traditional oxcart paintings, which are a national symbol of the country, and explore local artisan shops. Sarchí is also home to national coffee and sugar cane production farms where travelers can learn about two of Costa Rica’s most important exports. Nearby, travelers can uncover breathtaking waterfalls, rivers, turquoise pools and hiking trails in the small town of Bajos del Toro. With its several protected areas, lakes, lagoons, volcanoes, rivers and waterfalls, the Northern Plains is undergoing a boom in tourism service and adventure site development, so that nature-loving visitors can enjoy the region’s many riches.

With more than 400 miles of coast line, the Guanacaste tourism area comprises the Pacific Coast area from the border of Nicaragua to the Bongo River estuary in the Nicoya Peninsula. This tourism area is home to a very important section of Costa Rica’s cultural and natural heritage. This area boasts a significant number of protected areas including water, land, mountain, and coastal ecosystems that are teaming with life. The incomparable beauty of its landscapes, which ranges from tropical dry forests to lowland mountain forests, its warm climate, as well as its flourishing nature have made Guanacaste one of the most heavily visited areas by locals as well as international tourists and is one of the most developed areas because of its high level of investment in the hotel industry that is in high demand. All along the Guanacaste coastline are a number of beaches where you can swim in their warm Pacific Ocean waters. Guanacaste receives very little rain and consistent heat from November to April, which makes for optimal swimming weather year-round. There are two commercial centers located in the northern area: Liberia and Santa Cruz, which, in turn, are linked with five important tourism development centers: Papagayo, El Coco, Flamingo, Conchal, and Tamarindo. In the southern area, the commercial center is Nicoya with Samara being the development center. Guanacaste is also home to the town of Nicoya, one of the nine Blue Zones in the world, a geographic region of the world where people live the longest.
