Scales are the engine of quantitative analysis, and small mistakes here compound. The patterns that matter:

  • Unbalanced anchors — "Excellent / very good / good / fair / poor" has four positive labels and one negative. Pair the positives and negatives evenly to keep the average from drifting up.
  • Inconsistent scales across the survey — switching from a 5-point to a 7-point scale mid-survey forces re-orientation and adds noise. Pick one scale per construct and reuse.

Structural mistakes that lose respondents

  1. Too long — the single largest predictor of completion is length. If your survey takes more than five minutes for a consumer audience or ten for B2B, you have either a length problem or an incentive problem.
  2. Sensitive questions early — demographic, salary, or sensitive questions in the first third of the survey cause early drop-off. Put them last when sunk cost keeps respondents committed.

  • Surveying only happy customers — sample bias from suppressing detractors looks great in slides and produces no usable insight. Sample your whole population, not just the ones likely to score high.
  • Tying compensation to the score without protecting collection — once a team's bonus depends on the number, the survey gets curated, the sample drifts, and the score stops measuring what it claims to measure.
